The downside here is that you can’t run macOS applications and Windows applications side-by-side at the same time. If you just want to run a Windows desktop application alongside your Mac applications, a virtual machine will probably be ideal. On the other hand, if you want to play the latest Windows games on your Mac, Boot Camp will be ideal. Apple discussed Marzipan and allowing iOS apps to run on MacOS at the 2108 WWDC in June. Since Apple Silicon Macs will have the same processors as iPhone and iPad, Apple will let users download and install iOS apps on these Macs even if the developer doesn’t offer a specific version of the app for macOS.
Key point is the idea that you might have a choice between an Intel-built app running in some form of emulation on an Apple Silicon Mac or an iOS app running natively.
IPadian is an iOS simulator for Windows PC that has a similar GUI as of an iPad. The iPhone Simulator (available from Xcode) is not an emulator and can't run ARM code, which means that it has to run a specific version of iOS 7 designed for OS X, and is not able to run iOS apps that have not been designed to run on this version of iOS 7 (i.e. IPAs from the App Store).
Although by default all iOS apps are available on the Mac App Store for Apple Silicon, the company is allowing developers to opt their iOS apps out of the new unified store.
And there’s the rub. According to this post, not all iOS apps will be available on the new Macs.
If you were expecting to watch YouTube on your new Mac with a native app, you’re out of luck. Google has chosen not to offer most of its apps on the Apple Silicon platform, and this also includes Google Maps, Google Drive, and Gmail apps. On the other hand, the Netflix app for iOS is still on track to be available on new Macs, as well as the HBO Max app.
This is life on a new platform. Mac to mac data transfer. But over time, older Mac apps will either fade away, or rebuild for the new hardware. Over time, you’ll have all native apps, one way or the other.

Requirements
You’ll need a computer running Windows or Linux (not tested) and an iOS device (iPad or iPhone). Also required:
- VMWare or VirtualBox
- USB 2.0, not 3.0
- An Apple Developer account
- Xcode 10.1 (no other versions)
VMWare or VirtualBox?
After having tested various MacOS versions on different virtual machine systems like VMWare and VirtualBox, I found that the quickest solution was VMWare Player 15 with High Sierra 10.13.
Newer versions of MacOS drastically reduce the performance of the system, probably due to newer graphic drivers that aren’t 100% compatible with VM software.
First steps
The first step is to install your VM:
Switch USB
After your VM is fully connected and active, you’ll want to try out the connection to a real-world iOS device.
On VMWare, you have to switch the USB mode from 3.0 to 2.0 to let the 'Mac' see your Apple device.
Running Ios Apps On Mac
Once you have that handled, reboot the VM and connect the device while opening iTunes inside the VM. After a few seconds, you should see the device pairing to it.
Apple Developer account
Next you’ll need to prepare your Apple Developer account. Don’t worry, it’s free while you’re testing applications on your local device. You only have to pay to publish your app on the App Store.

- Search for Xcode 10.1 and download this XCode zip file, around 5.6GB
- Unzip the file and move the App file to the Applications folder.

This is because newer versions aren’t supported on High Sierra 10.13.6. Some people have been able to use the newest version, but it would require modifying some app files and would just make it harder.
If you get the 10.1 version, however, you’ll be ready to code in a few minutes instead of a few hours.
Get some support
There’s a downside to using Xcode 10.1.
New iOS versions, like iOS 12 or 13, aren’t supported on it. So if you try to run your app on an iPhone with iOS 13, you’ll get a warning that it can’t install on that device.
